The Wilder Mile

We need your help to wild one square mile of Southwark

The goal of the Wilder Mile is to radically improve biodiversity in one square mile of Southwark. We are calling on organisations and individuals – from the Thames south to Elephant & Castle – to commit to wildlife friendly interventions.

How it works

If you join the Wilder Mile, we will offer tailored advice on how to wild your space. We also provide a design and/or planting service, and can connect you to local gardening volunteers.

Wilder can help you transform a concrete space into a wildlife garden, put up a bird box, install a pond or build a pallet planter and fill it with butterfly-friendly plants.

Biodiversity

Over a three-year period, we plan to monitor and substantially improve biodiversity and air quality within one square mile, and increase knowledge of wildlife-friendly practices. We hope this model will be rolled across other areas and other cities.

Wilder Mile community

Key organisations within the square mile have so far signed up to be part of the Wilder Mile: Tate Modern, the Jerwood Space, Borough Market, Southwark Cathedral and the Young VIc. We are helping turn their outdoor spaces into wildlife gardens. If you sign up and green your space we’ll add you to the Wilder Mile map, and you’ll join our network of organisations and individuals committed to environmental improvements.
